Personally, I have given up all hope of learning the Laz language, and my son Ali Deniz
probably will not be able to learn it either. I do tell him, however, that he is “Turkish,
but at the same time Laz.” For though our numbers may be few, and though we
inevitably find our ties with our language and culture severed, Turkey has always
needed us Laz, and it always will. As for us, we most certainly need Turkey, too.
